The Week That Was, 10.12.2024

October 13, 2024

WE’VE KNOWN for years that dietary supplements are the Wild, Wild West of nutrition, not regulated by the FDA or the USDA. But Well-Being columnist Mary Carpenter last week put a little more meat on the bones of that knowledge, recounting some of the actual harm those little add-ons can do. Bye-bye, turmeric!

Also science-y but a lot more upbeat, Kitchen Detail’s Nancy Pollard shared the facts behind cooking potatoes depending on the cooking method and the type of spud. I learned a lot!

How Not to F*ck Up Your Face columnist Valerie Monroe waded back into the perennial problem of the dry skin around our eyes. That skin is the thinnest on our bodies, so no wonder they cry out for extra help. And Val provided it.

While Green Acre columnist Stephanie Cavanaugh was planting pansies and cooing to her budgies (be sure to read her footnote: one of the new eggs is MIA), LittleBird Janet Kelly gave us a fashion break: a trend but one anchored in American history and lore. Yes, that’s right, it’s time to giddy up on over to the store, or your computer, to buy some cowgirl flare.

Tomorrow Val Monroe will be back here, vetting yet more substances and treatments that claim to rescue our skin. (We wish!) See ya then.
