The Week That Was, 11.16.2024

November 17, 2024

EAT A BANANA, you’ll feel better. Sounds snarky, maybe, but there’s science behind it, Well-Being columnist Mary Carpenter reported last week. Turns out there’s a real connection between our daily diet and those depressed or anxious thoughts in our heads.

Of course, what we put into our bodies is a subject near and dear to Nancy Pollard’s heart. Last week, in her Ode to Onions, she proposed two recipes that would ensure their place at the Thanksgiving table, possibly outshining those trendy Brussels sprouts.

Sticking with the food theme, somehow, I highlighted a bunch of evening bags that are having a moment, and they’re all foodie-forward. Most of them don’t reach the level of artistry and craftsmanship of a Judith Leiber (see her watermelon slice pictured here), whose Judith Leiber Couture survives her, but they’re still a lot of fun, which seems in short supply this season.

On the home front, Green Acre columnist Stephanie Cavanaugh celebrated the availability of cyclamen to add color to otherwise-dreary window boxes (and even in the ground if your weather stays on the mild side).

In her How Not to F*ck Up Your Face column, Valerie Monroe (and experts) tackled a reader’s question about those little spider veins that are making her unhappy. And tomorrow Val will be back, examining (well, sorta) the relationship between her complexion and . . . salmon!

Stick around!
