YES, WE’RE not yet past Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean that the holidays aren’t bearing down on us. In addition to urging us to shop at retail stores, the season also presents special holiday markets, most of which have personal and handmade items not found north of

The Big Daddy of holiday markets is arguably Esprit de Noël, at Georgetown Visitation Prep. But pay attention: The market, a jolly, sharp-elbows kind of event, promises more than 70 vendors across several buildings. And it’s on right now: Friday, November 4, 2016, 11am to 9pm and Saturday, November 5, 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

(And check out this enchanting Sister Noel Nutcracker, a limited edition made by hand for the Visitation sale by the only American nutcracker artisan. The snow-dog trays  shown on the front are from the 2015 Esprit.)

Christmas Village in Baltimore brings a real German outdoor holiday market to the streets around the Inner Harbor. Featuring European food, ornaments and crafts from around the world, the market starts on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, from 11am to 5pm, and marching daily (hours vary slightly) right up until December 24. (Note that the Village is closed on Tuesday, November 29.)

Next on the calendar is the Downtown Holiday Market, centered on 8th and F streets NW in downtown DC. Starting on Friday, November 25, 2016, 60 vendors of jewelry, art, clothing, kids’ things—a different 60 each day—will hawk their wares rain or shine. The market runs daily from noon to 8pm until December 23.

Of course, you don’t have to start shopping on Black Friday. Instead, you can go out drinking! Miracle on Seventh Street is coming back to DC’s Shaw neighborhood, bigger and better than last year. This time, three establishments—Mockingbird Hill, Eat the Rich and Southern Efficiency—

will all three be decorated Christmas-crazy. There are no reservations for this “Christmas Cocktail Bar”: After all, the organizers inform us, “Life at the North Pole is a casual affair.”

But back to shopping. The Alexandria Holiday Market, in the Virginia city’s Carlyle District, runs Friday, Saturday and  Sunday starting Saturday, December 3, 2016, and then daily from December 16 through December 22. Hours are 11am to 7pm.

An unusual holiday sale is the Rock-n-Shop at the Black Cat club on thriving 14th Street NW in DC. This is a specialty sale, centered on records, rock, rock T-shirts. Something for Dad?
